STEM Alliance

STEM Alliance

HKIC establishes the STEM Alliance in 2018 to bring together secondary school teachers and students to promote STEM education under the direction of the Education Bureau. We are committed to facilitate STEM education and knowledge-based/experience-based activities with an aim to promote secondary school student's exposure and awareness of engineering and technology, so as to prepare them for their future learning and development in innovation and technology. The alliance is led by a steering group with representatives from the Development Bureau, STEM specialists, education providers and the construction industry.

Work Objectives

1. To assist secondary schools to promote STEM education. Through organizing different activities, the Alliance enhances student's interests and understanding in construction and engineering, thereby enabling them to build scientific thinking and learning patterns. Activities are classified as follows:

  • Other Learning Experience (OLE)-In coping with the OLE (work-related experience) requirements in the senior secondary school system, the Alliance will provide students with broad and diversified learning opportunities to promote their whole-person development and enable them to apply acquired theories to practical situations, thereby boosting student's abilities in tackling difficulties and motivating them to think creatively.
  • Thematic seminars-STEM specialists, industry professionals and scholars will host seminars to share with students their specialized academic knowledge or expertise.
  • Experience-based activities-Designed to enable students to question existing stereotypes that are found in academic subjects and allow students to adopt a proactive hands-on approach to acquire unusual learning experience.
  • Competitions-Designed to leverage the competitiveness and team spirits amongst students, so as to build their confidence and motivate them to make a difference.

2. To provide support and teaching resources. The Alliance will help secondary school teachers gain an understanding of the missions of STEM education, especially those missions that are associated with the construction and engineering.

3. To promote construction-related technological development and enhance the image of the industry.

4. To become the bridge of communication between schools and the construction industry, and provide a unified sharing and support platform for STEM and construction/engineering-related activities.

Latest Event

The Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology applied in this competition is an important technology in the construction engineering field. It utilises computer software to manage projects such as planning, design, tendering, construction, operation, facility management and interior design. The objective of this competition is to raise awareness among the secondary school students on BIM and equip students with basic knowledge on its application software, REVIT and design their ideal campuses under the theme of smart campus, sustainable development and shared space.
